Zero Plastic

The Zero Plastic Club of KIU University is a dynamic student-led initiative dedicated to fostering environmental sustainability through awareness, education, and action. Established as part of KIU’s broader commitment to social and environmental responsibility, the club serves as a platform for students to lead positive environmental change both on campus and in the wider community.

Objectives

  • To promote sustainable practices by reducing plastic usage within the university premises.
  • To educate the university community on the environmental impact of plastic pollution through workshops, seminars, and awareness campaigns.
  • To initiate and support plastic-free alternatives and green innovations in campus operations and student activities.
  • To collaborate with local and national organizations to amplify zero-plastic advocacy and action.

Student Engagement

The Zero Plastic Club actively engages students from all faculties, encouraging them to take part in eco-friendly campaigns, recycling drives, clean-up projects, and creative solution-based competitions. Through hands-on experiences and collaborative projects, students develop leadership, project management, and community engagement skills while contributing meaningfully to sustainability goals.

Future Aims

  • To make KIU a model green campus by implementing long-term zero-plastic strategies.
  • To establish a permanent waste management and recycling framework in collaboration with university administration and external partners.
  • To launch an annual Zero Plastic Summit, bringing together students, environmentalists, and industry experts to share ideas and innovations.
  • To extend the club’s outreach to schools and communities, becoming a youth-led catalyst for environmental transformation across Sri Lanka.

Welcome from the KIU Students' Union

“My time at Cambridge has been the most rewarding few years of my life. I applied with an idea of Cambridge as this distant mythical place where I couldn’t quite
imagine myself belonging, but I now struggle to see myself anywhere else.

The opportunities at Cambridge are like no other – from participating in clubs and societies to finding your way around College and learning to live independently. Most of all, the chance to study a subject you love while surrounded by students and academics who are just as passionate about it as you are leaves you with skills to take forward into life far beyond those you were expecting when you applied. I cannot encourage you enough to read on and then take the leap and apply!”
