The Bachelor of Laws Honours (LL.B) offered by the Faculty of Law at KIU University, Sri Lanka, is a UGC-recognized four-year law degree designed for students aspiring to build a career in law, justice, or governance. This comprehensive program provides a strong foundation in legal theory, practice, and ethics, covering subjects such as constitutional law, contract law, criminal law, human rights law, and international law. In addition, the curriculum emphasizes legal research, critical thinking, advocacy, and public speaking skills.
What makes the KIU LL.B stand out is its industry-focused approach. Students gain practical exposure through moot court training, mandatory legal internships with leading law chambers, and a final-year dissertation. Graduates are prepared for careers as attorneys-at-law, legal advisors, policy consultants, academics, or human rights advocates.

The LL.B program is structured across four years and eight semesters, combining compulsory and elective modules with practical training.

  • Year 1: Legal System of Sri Lanka, Legal Method, Constitutional Law, Family Law, Administrative Law, Criminal Law, Land Law, Law of Contract.
  • Year 2: Law of Delict, Equity and Trusts, Statutory Interpretation, Commercial Law, Public International Law, Labour Law, Private International Law, Human Rights Law, Law of Evidence, Environmental Law, International Institutions.
  • Year 3: Company Law, International Humanitarian Law, Intellectual Property Law, International Investment Law, Criminal Procedure, Tax Law, Construction Law, Insurance Law, Media Law, Civil Procedure, Competition Law, Banking Law, International Criminal Law.
  • Year 4: Jurisprudence, Research Methodology, ICT Law, Arbitration Law, Air and Space Law, International Trade Law, Law of the Sea, Ethics of Legal Profession, Dissertation, Law and Medicine, Sports Law, Tourism and Hospitality Law.

To apply for the KIU Bachelor of Laws Honours (LL.B) program, applicants must meet the following:

  • Two Credit passes and one Simple pass in any stream at GCE A/L or London A/L (in one sitting).
  • A Credit pass in English and Sinhala or Tamil at GCE O/L (or equivalent).
  • Equivalent international qualifications approved by the Ministry of Higher Education
    are also accepted.

Graduates of the KIU LL.B program can:

  • Enter the Sri Lanka Law College to qualify as Attorneys-at-Law.
  • Pursue postgraduate studies (LL.M, MPhil, or PhD) locally or internationally.
  • Build careers as legal consultants, corporate lawyers, academics, researchers, human rights advocates, or public service professionals.
