About KIU Siyakirana Udanaya 2025

KIU Siyakirana Udanaya 2025 is the annual Sinhala and Tamil New Year festival organized by KIU University, bringing together students, academic staff, and non-academic staff for a full day of traditional celebrations, cultural performances, and joyful festivities. Held at the spacious T.B Ilangaraththne Grounds in Mulleriyawa, this year’s celebration was a vibrant tribute to Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage — a day where the entire KIU community came together in the true spirit of the New Year.

From the early morning hours through to the evening, the grounds came alive with colour, music, laughter, and the warmth of community. The event featured traditional games, cultural performances, artistic displays, and shared moments that strengthened the bonds between students and staff across all faculties.

The Faculty of Computer Science & Engineering at Siyakirana Udanaya

The Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering (FOCSEC) played an enthusiastic and prominent role in making KIU Siyakirana Udanaya 2025 a truly memorable occasion. Far from limiting themselves to academic pursuits, the students and staff of the faculty demonstrated their creativity, team spirit, and cultural pride through three outstanding contributions.

1. Traditional Backdrop

One of the most visually striking features of the festival was the traditional-themed backdrop designed and crafted by students from the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering. The backdrop beautifully captured the spirit of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, featuring vibrant illustrations of traditional motifs, nature, and festive imagery deeply rooted in Sri Lankan culture.

The creation of the backdrop was a collaborative effort that brought students together outside the lecture hall — painting, designing, and working as a team to produce something meaningful and celebratory. The finished artwork stood as a proud centerpiece of the festival grounds, drawing admiration from all attendees and reflecting the faculty’s creativity that extends well beyond coding and computing.

2. Dancing Item

Adding rhythm and colour to the festivities, students from the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering delivered a lively cultural dance performance that captivated the audience. Dressed in traditional attire, the performers showcased the grace and vibrancy of Sri Lankan dance, earning enthusiastic applause from fellow students, staff, and guests alike.

The dance item was a testament to the well-rounded nature of KIU students — individuals who pursue technical excellence in the classroom while also embracing cultural expression and the performing arts. The performance added significant energy to the day’s programme and highlighted the diverse talents within the faculty.

3. Blindfold Pot Breaking – Kana Mutti Bindeema

No Sri Lankan New Year celebration is complete without traditional games, and the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering brought plenty of excitement with the crowd-favourite Kana Mutti Bindeema (Blindfold Pot Breaking). This classic New Year game had participants blindfolded and attempting to break a clay pot, guided only by the cheers and laughter of the crowd.

The game was a huge hit — generating moments of pure fun, friendly competition, and uncontrollable laughter that perfectly captured the festive spirit. It drew large crowds throughout the day and created some of the most joyful memories of the entire celebration.
