About the Event
On 24th March 2025, KIU University welcomed the Kumarika Hair Play Studio to campus — a mobile beauty salon experience brought to students directly at the KIU University premises, running from 11:30 AM through to 5:30 PM. Organised in collaboration with Hemas Holdings PLC and co-presented by the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering’s student society FOCSEC, the event offered KIU students a full afternoon of complimentary professional hair care services.
The Kumarika Hair Play Studio is a mobile salon concept designed to bring professional-grade hair care directly to communities, campuses, and events — removing the need for students to travel off-campus to access quality services. Its visit to KIU formed part of Kumarika’s wider engagement with Sri Lankan youth, bringing the brand and its expertise face-to-face with its audience in a relaxed, interactive setting.
About Kumarika and Hemas Holdings
Hemas Manufacturing is the largest Sri Lankan entity in the Home and Personal Care sector, with over 70 years of rich heritage. The company has built consumer trust through strong purpose-led brands and progressive sustainability practices, striving to bring healthful living and personal care solutions through a portfolio of world-class products.
Kumarika is one of Hemas’s flagship hair care brands, offering a comprehensive range of hair oils, shampoos, conditioners, and hair serums catering to every aspect of the modern Sri Lankan woman’s hair care needs — formulated for Sri Lankan hair with the goodness of natural botanicals and locally sourced ingredients. The range draws on traditional Sri Lankan herbal knowledge, incorporating ingredients such as Gotukola, Komarika, Keekirindiya, Karapincha, king coconut oil, and rice extracts — making it a brand deeply rooted in local heritage while meeting contemporary hair care standards.
What Students Experienced
Students who visited the Hair Play Studio on campus received free professional hair services including hair analysis, cleansing, and styling — delivered by trained Kumarika professionals. The hair analysis component in particular gave students personalised insight into their hair type, common concerns such as hair fall, dandruff, or damage, and tailored recommendations for care routines going forward.
Beyond the services themselves, students had access to expert advice from Kumarika representatives — practical guidance on how to maintain healthy hair, what products suit different hair types, and how everyday habits affect hair health. Special product discounts were also available on the day, giving students the opportunity to try the full Kumarika range at a reduced price.
A Different Kind of Campus Event
Not every beneficial campus event takes the form of a lecture or workshop. The Kumarika Hair Play Studio visit offered something different — a space for students to take a break, look after themselves, and engage with a well-known Sri Lankan brand in a genuinely relaxed environment. Events like this contribute to the broader wellbeing of the student community, reinforcing KIU’s commitment to campus life that supports students holistically — not just academically, but personally.
The event was open to anyone on campus, making it one of the most inclusive and widely attended activations of the semester.
