The Master of Science in Nursing at KIU is designed to advance nursing professionals by fostering expertise, leadership, and innovation in practice and education.

The Master of Science in Nursing at KIU is designed to advance nursing professionals by fostering expertise, leadership, and innovation in practice and education. By offering in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge, the degree equips nurses to expand their practice scope, take on specialized or administrative roles, and drive transformative improvements in patient care and healthcare systems. This program is accredited and recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education and the University Grants Commission (UGC). 

 

Year One –  Year One Semester 01 

NUP1101 – Integral Nursing (Holistic Nursing & Global Nursing) – 3 Credits 

NUP1202 – Theoretical and Philosophical Foundations of Nursing – 6 Credits 

NUP1203 – Research Methods and Ethics in Nursing Research – 6 Credits 

 

Year One –  Year One Semester 02 

NUP1104 – Statistics – 3 Credits 

(Elective – I) NUP1206 – Educational Processes in Nursing or NUP1205 – Leadership and Management in Nursing – 6 Credits 

(Elective – II) NUP1207 – Project in Nursing Education or – NUP1208 Project in Nursing Management – 6 Credits 

 

Year Two  

NUP2201 – Quantitative Research Methods – 6 Credits  

NUP2202 – Qualitative Research Methods – 6 Credits  

NUP2603 – Research Dissertation – 18 Credits  

(i) being General Nurses, Nursing Sisters, Chief Nursing Officers, the successful completion of the SLQF Level 6 in the Bachelor of Science Honours in Nursing in any recognized university or

(ii) the successful completion of the SLQF Level 9 in the Master of Nursing Education or Master of Nursing Management in any recognized university or

(iii) being Nursing Graduates, in the Bachelor of Science Honours in Nursing (SLQF Level 6) in any recognized university or

(iv) the successful completion of the SLQF Level 6 or above in the relevant area of study, accepted by the Specified Authority as prescribed in the Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF), and shall adhere to the condition that the name of the qualification shall not have any qualifier or specification attached to it

  • Nursing Sister/ Nurse Manager / Matron / Nursing Administrator – Lead and manage nursing services within hospitals under the Ministry of Health, private hospitals, or teaching institutions, ensuring effective care coordination, resource allocation, and staff development. 
  • Nurse Educator / Clinical Instructor – Teach and mentor student nurses at universities, nursing training schools, and teaching hospitals, aligning clinical training with the Sri Lanka Nursing Council (SLNC) standards and national competency frameworks. 
  • Nursing Researcher – Conduct clinical and educational research that informs nursing practice, public health policy, and quality improvement initiatives, collaborating with academic institutions, hospitals, and health ministries. 
  • Public Health Nursing Officer / Community Health Coordinator – Implement and evaluate health promotion and disease prevention programs across Sri Lanka’s public health network, supporting the National Health Strategic Plan. 
  • Quality Assurance or Policy Development Officer – Work with the Ministry of Health, private hospital chains, or professional bodies to design, monitor, and evaluate standards in nursing care, safety, and education. 
  • University Lecturer / Academic Professional – Join state or private universities as a lecturer, course coordinator, or academic administrator in nursing and health sciences programs. 
  • Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) – Function as expert practitioners in specialized areas such as critical care, maternal and child health, surgical, or community health nursing, enhancing clinical standards and guiding practice improvements. 
  • Engagement in International Development and NGOs such as WHO, UNICEF, or Red Cross programs that focus on nursing capacity building and healthcare system strengthening in Sri Lanka and the South Asian region. 
  • Leadership and Advisory Roles within the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka Nursing Council (SLNC), Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC), or University Grants Commission (UGC) to shape nursing education standards and national health policies. 

 

Further Studies  

  • Master of Philosophy in Nursing (MPhil) or Doctoral Studies (PhD) in Nursing, Health Sciences, or Education through local universities or international collaborations to pursue advanced leadership, academic, or research careers. 
  • Specialized Postgraduate Diplomas or Certificates in areas such as Critical Care Nursing, Nursing Leadership, Education, or Community Health from local or international institutions.
