Master of Philosophy in Nursing [MPhil (Nursing)] is designed to develop the capacity of graduate nurses with advanced knowledge and skills in nursing; to conduct a high quality nursing research; to continue post graduate studies at higher levels; and to enhance the capacities of graduates to function as nursing academics, nursing administrators and managers, advanced practice nurses, and nurse researchers in the field of nursing. Completion of this level could lead to continued doctoral studies at SLQF Level 12.

The Master of Philosophy program is a highly flexible course that includes independent, supervised research and a steppingstone to transition to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). A Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is awarded based on a thesis prepared under supervision. The candidate should present the findings of an original scholarly inquiry that demonstrates the candidate’s knowledge of the research topic and the related discipline, as judged by a panel of experts. 

Preparatory Courses  

Graduates (SLQF Level 5 & 6) who register directly for the programme are expected to follow the preparatory course and gain a pass mark to be eligible to submit the thesis.

A minimum of “Pass” (≥ 50%) is required at the final examination of the preparatory course for eligibility to submit thesis. 

 

  • (a)the successful completion of SLQF Level 6 in a Bachelor’s Honours Degree in any recognized University in the relevant area of study with a minimum of 30 credits;  or   
  • (b) the successful completion of SLQF Level 6 in a Bachelor’s Honours Degree in any recognized University with a minimum of 30 credits in a related area of study and successful completion of a qualifying examination;  or   
  • (c) the successful completion of SLQF Level 5 in a Bachelor’s Degree in any recognized University with a minimum of GPA 3.0 at a scale of 0-4 and successful completion of a qualifying examination which will be conducted after the completion of 30 credits equivalent to SLQF Level 6, in the same or related area of study;  or   
  • (d) the successful completion of SLQF Level 7 or above in a relevant area of study;  or   
  • (e) the successful completion of NVQ Level 7 with a minimum of GPA 3.0 at a scale of 0-4 and successful completion of a qualifying examination which will be conducted after the completion of 30 credits equivalent to SLQF Level 6 or 7, as determined by the Specified Authority for admission in that field of specialization.
