Master of Philosophy in Nursing [MPhil (Nursing)] is designed to develop the capacity of graduate nurses with advanced knowledge and skills in nursing

Master of Philosophy in Nursing [MPhil (Nursing)] is designed to develop the capacity of graduate nurses with advanced knowledge and skills in nursing; to conduct a high quality nursing research; to continue post graduate studies at higher levels; and to enhance the capacities of graduates to function as nursing academics, nursing administrators and managers, advanced practice nurses, and nurse researchers in the field of nursing. Completion of this level could lead to continued doctoral studies at SLQF Level 12. Registration for the MPhil could also lead to upgrade of the MPhil to a PhD by fulfilling the necessary criteria.  

The full program will be two years of full time involving in original research (6000 notional hours) for Master of Philosophy in Nursing [MPhil (Nursing)].

It is compulsory that graduates with SLQF Level 5 and 6 will complete specified preparatory courses concurrently or prior to the involvement of the research activity and develop their knowledge on research.

 

NUP32001 Dissertation

Preparatory Courses & Exemption

Graduates (SLQF Level 5 & 6) who register directly for the programme are expected to follow the preparatory course and gain a pass mark to be eligible to submit the thesis.

An exemption is given for the compulsory components (NUP1104 & NUP1203) of the preparatory course for those graduates who have obtained Master of Nursing Education/ Management/ Master of Science in Nursing offered by KIU. However, based on the candidate’s research project a relevant module from the preparatory course is mandatory to follow and gain a pass mark.

  • NUP1104 Statistics
  • NUP1203 Research Methods and Ethics in Nursing Research

 

Optional Modules – minimum of one module to be chosen as based on the research

  • NUP1205 Leadership and Management in Nursing
  • NUP1206 Educational Processes in Nursing
  • NUP2201 Quantitative Research Methods
  • NUP2202 Qualitative Research Methods

A minimum of “Pass” (≥ 50%) is required at the final examination of preparatory course for eligibility to submit thesis.

  • Nursing Officers who have completed the SLQF Level 6 of Bachelor of Science Honors in (Nursing) successfully, in any institution will be eligible to apply for this program.  

OR 

  • The successful completion of the SLQF Level 7 and above with nursing qualification from a UGC recognized university / institution. 

OR 

  • The successful completion of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing or SLQF Level 5 in Bachelor of Nursing in any UGC recognized university/institution and successful completion of 30 credit passes in the Nursing Field. 

 

  1. Establish a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing

Key Actions: 

  • Develop a PhD curriculum emphasizing advanced nursing theory, independent research, and innovation. 
  • Align with UGC and SLQF PhD requirements. 
  • Leverage existing MPhil supervisors and Research Innovation Division expertise. 
  • Prepare documentation for UGC submission. 

 

  1. Strengthen Translational and Applied Research
  • Move from “research for degree” to “research for impact.” 
  • Focus areas could include: 
  • Nursing leadership and workforce policy. 
  • Clinical outcome improvement projects. 
  • Health system innovations. 

 

  1. Launch Thematic Research Clusters under the Research & Innovation Division

Possible clusters: 

  • Geriatric & Dementia Care 
  • Chronic Disease Management & Patient Education 
  • Nursing Education and Pedagogical Innovations 
  • AI and Digital Health in Nursing 
  • Mental Health & Community Nursing 
  • These clusters can hold mini-grant calls, symposia, and collaborative projects. 

 

  1. Establish an Annual “KIU Nursing Research Congress”
  • A national or regional event hosted by the Nursing & Research Division. 
  • Showcase MSc, MPhil, and PhD student research. 
  • Invite Ministry of Health officials, UGC representatives, and international collaborators. 
  • Could include best thesis awards, keynote sessions, and workshops. 

 

  1. Develop Collaborative PhD or Joint Research Supervision Models
  • Partner with international universities that already offer PhDs in Nursing or Health Sciences. 
  • Possibilities: joint PhD supervision, student exchange, or co-authored research. 
  • Outcome: strengthens KIU’s academic network and accelerates UGC PhD approval. 

 

  1. Create an Internal Research Grant & Publication Support Scheme
  • Offer seed grants for MPhil graduates to extend their research toward PhD-level or applied projects. 
  • Support publication in Scopus- or PubMed-indexed journals. 
  • Establish an institutional fund for open-access publishing fees. 

 

  1. Introduce Postgraduate Certificate in Research Supervision & Mentorship
  • Develop short training programmes (3–6 months) for emerging academics. 
  • Train MSc and MPhil graduates who wish to become future supervisors. 
  • Align with UGC’s expectations for supervisor competence. 

 

  1. Establish a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Scheme
  • For exceptional MPhil or PhD graduates to continue research within KIU. 
  • Short-term (6–12 months) fellowships focusing on applied or translational nursing research.
