The Master of Nursing Management at KIU is designed to develop exceptional leaders equipped to navigate and manage the complexities of healthcare environments. This postgraduate program is tailored for nurses aspiring to leadership and administrative roles, emphasizing skills in healthcare management, policy development, and effective decision-making. This program is accredited and recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education and the University Grants Commission (UGC). 

Year One Semester 01 

NUP1101 – Integral Nursing (Holistic Nursing & Global Nursing) – 3 Credits 

NUP1202 – Theoretical and Philosophical Foundations of Nursing – 6 Credits 

NUP1203 – Research Methods and Ethics in Nursing Research – 6 Credits 

 

Year One Semester 02 

NUP1104 – Statistics – 3 Credits 

(Elective – I) NUP1205 – Leadership and Management in Nursing – 6 Credits 

(Elective – II) NUP1208 – Project in Nursing Management– 6 Credits

(i) being General Nurses, Nursing Sisters, Chief Nursing Officers, the successful completion of the SLQF Level 6 in the Bachelor of Science Honours in Nursing in any recognized university; or 

(ii) the successful completion of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing or SLQF Level 5 in Bachelor of Nursing in any recognized university and successful completion of 30 credit passes in the Nursing Field. as prescribed in the Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF), and shall adhere to the condition that, the name of qualification shall not have any qualifier or specifications attached to it.  

Graduates of the Master of Nursing Management are equipped with the advanced leadership, strategic, and clinical management skills needed to guide modern healthcare organizations toward excellence. The program nurtures nurse leaders who can balance evidence-based clinical practice with administrative expertise to optimize patient care, staff performance, and healthcare outcomes. 

Career Opportunities: 

  • Nurse Manager / Ward Manager / Nursing In-charge / Nursing Sister – Lead clinical nursing teams within hospital units or community health centers, ensuring quality patient care, effective resource utilization, and adherence to healthcare standards. 
  • Chief Nursing Officer (CNO)/ Director of Nursing – Oversee nursing services across hospitals or healthcare networks, develop strategic policies, and uphold professional and ethical nursing standards. 
  • Health Services Administrator – Manage staffing, budgeting, and workflow processes in diverse healthcare environments, ensuring operational efficiency. 
  • Clinical Educator / Staff Development Officer – Bridge management and education by training and mentoring nursing teams, promoting continuing professional development, and embedding leadership within clinical practice.

Further Studies:  

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSc) or Master of Philosophy in Nursing (MPhil) or Doctoral Studies (PhD) in Nursing Leadership, Healthcare Management, or Health Policy for advanced roles in academia, research, and senior health administration. 
  • Specialized Postgraduate Diplomas or Certificates in areas such as Critical Care Nursing, Nursing Leadership, Education, or Community Health from local or international institutions.
