KIU Centre for Quality Assurance (CQA)

About the Centre for Quality Assurance

The KIU Centre for Quality Assurance (CQA) is the dedicated institutional body responsible for upholding, monitoring, and continuously improving academic and operational quality standards across KIU University. It functions as the central coordinating unit for all quality assurance activities within the university — ensuring that every degree programme, faculty, and administrative process meets the standards expected of a recognised degree-awarding institution in Sri Lanka.

Role and Mandate

KIU University maintains a strong Institutional Review Score and a commitment to quality assurance, continuously upholding high standards in private higher education in Sri Lanka. The CQA is the engine behind that commitment — translating policy into practice and providing the structures through which quality is systematically monitored and improved.

Among its core functions, the CQA offers guidance and assistance in defining programme objectives and outcomes, graduate profiles, and course curricula — ensuring these are in accordance with national reference points such as the Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework (SLQF) and Subject Benchmark Statements (SBSs). It supports the establishment and effective functioning of Internal Quality Assurance Cells (IQACs) across KIU’s faculties, and promotes and coordinates all QA-related activities through workshops, seminars, and the development of manuals covering academic regulations, equipment use, and laboratory procedures.

Connecting KIU to National and International Standards

Quality assurance at KIU is not an internal exercise alone — it is actively aligned with the national framework governing higher education in Sri Lanka. The CQA liaises with the Quality Assurance Council (QAC) of the University Grants Commission and other external quality assurance agencies, as well as relevant international agencies, ensuring KIU’s quality practices are benchmarked against both national requirements and global standards.

The CQA also develops, reviews, and revises the by-laws, manuals of operations, and standard operational procedures necessary for the governance and management of quality assurance at the university. This includes maintaining the documentation and review processes that support external institutional reviews and programme accreditation assessments.

Publications

The CQA produces and maintains key institutional documents that govern how quality is assured at KIU. These are made available for transparency and reference by staff, students, and external stakeholders.

The KIU Quality Assurance Policy Manual (January 2025) sets out the university’s overarching QA policy framework — covering governance, accountability structures, and the principles that guide quality assurance practice across all faculties and departments.

The Quality Assessment Policy: External and Internal Reviews at KIU (January 2025) provides a detailed framework for how both internal and external review processes are conducted at the university. This 37-page document outlines the procedures, criteria, and responsibilities involved in programme and institutional reviews — ensuring these processes are rigorous, consistent, and aligned with UGC expectations.

Both documents are available for download via the links above.

Why Quality Assurance Matters

For students, quality assurance means confidence — that the degree they are working toward is built on a curriculum that meets recognised national standards, delivered by qualified academic staff, and assessed through processes that are fair and consistent. For employers and partner institutions, it means that a KIU qualification carries genuine credibility.

For KIU as an institution, the CQA represents an ongoing commitment: not just to meeting the minimum requirements of accreditation, but to continuously raising the bar for what a private university education in Sri Lanka can be.
