How We Started – The Journey of KIU University
KIU University, established in 2009, is a leading non-state higher education institute in Sri Lanka, accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education and recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 25A of the Universities Act, No. 16 of 1978.
In 2015, KIU was granted degree-awarding status, initially launching with three undergraduate programs. Since then, our academic portfolio has grown significantly to include 14 undergraduate and 5 postgraduate degree programs across 8 faculties and 17 departments.
Today, KIU stands as one of Sri Lanka’s most acclaimed private universities, known for its innovative degree programs, world-class infrastructure, and strong academic reputation. Our programs are designed to prepare students for success in their chosen careers and empower them to thrive in a competitive global environment.

It is with deep respect and admiration that we gather today to honour the extraordinary life and legacy of Honourable Matsumoto Hisaichi—a visionary leader, celebrated artist, and pioneering environmentalist whose remarkable contributions have left a lasting imprint on Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, and across Japan.
From an early age, Honourable Matsumoto Hisaichi demonstrated a rare and profound artistic talent. Each of his creations is a singular masterpiece, crafted once and never repeated, making every work truly unique. His distinctive artistic voice earned him acclaim throughout Takamatsu City, where his work continues to be revered as a cultural treasure.
Beyond the canvas, Honourable Matsumoto Hisaichi has long been recognized for his enduring passion for golf. An active member of the golfing community since his youth, he is widely respected both for his sportsmanship and his enduring contributions to the sport in his region.
A Visionary in Sustainability and Innovation
Honourable Matsumoto Hisaichi’s foresight extended far beyond the arts. At a time when the concept of recycling was still new to Japan, he boldly championed sustainability, believing in its potential to transform the nation. Through perseverance and purpose, he established a nationwide network of recycling companies, stretching from Hokkaidō to Okinawa, making him a recognized leader in Japan’s environmental movement.
His inspiring journey from humble beginnings to becoming a billionaire entrepreneur is marked not only by financial success but by social responsibility. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he made generous donations to support public health initiatives, including significant contributions to the prefecture council, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to giving back.

Honourable Matsumoto Hisaichi has played a critical role on the national and international stage. He served as a trusted confidant to former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and maintains strong ties with Tadashi Yanai, the globally recognized business magnate behind Uniqlo. His recent efforts to strengthen bilateral relations, including facilitating the visit of Minister Bandula Gunawardane and his delegation to Japan for discussions on introducing Kawasaki Motors to Sri Lanka, showcase his impact as a strategic connector and economic catalyst.
